INITIAL PLANS FOR SWADDAR’S DEFENCE

THE NEXT MORNING the Rebels and Tumay were on the Bridge listening to Chief Communications Officer Perry giving a summary commentary of recent events that had taken place on board Starship Trump. Perry was in his usual position, bent over his communications console with his headphones tight to his ears …

“Seems that there have been a gruesome series of executions,” he said. “Got the figure … It’s 403 atomised with disruptor pulse guns after thinking they were about to receive an award for loyalty. And 124 made to walk the plank.”

“‘Walk the plank?’” questioned Tumay.

“It’s an old term that was used in the ancient days on the high seas when the only ships that existed were those that moved on water. It was a method of execution practiced on special occasions by rogue sailors. Pirates and mutineers, for instance. Basically, the victims were bound so they could not swim or even tread water. Then they were forced to walk off the end of a wooden plank that was extended over the side of the ship. This was done for the amusement of the executioners and the psychological torture of the victims. Acts as a strong deterrent against any insubordination. In Trump’s case, the plank is the floor of the nearest Top Deck exit into space. You can guess the rest.”

“Sounds like the sort of execution Trump would find very satisfying,” said Jake.

Perry spoke again. “The data shows that 497 of the 527 executed were newly graduated students.”

“Trump is obviously stripping away any crew members that he thinks are not 100% behind him,” said Captain Branson. “There’s no doubt that if he succeeds in what he is doing, there will be less than a handful of people spared of his crew.”

“Uh-oh,” said Perry.

“What is it?” asked Captain Branson.

“It’s Engineer Hughes.”

“What about him?”

“You know how clumsy he is.”

“No one clumsier.”

“He’s just spilled some coffee.”

“So? What’s new?”

“Some of the coffee sprayed onto Trump’s shoes …”

“And the result?” The Captain raised his left eyebrow.

“Trump has put a hole in his head with a laser burst from his handgun.”

“Poor old Hughes,” said Carol. “I’m not surprised he got so clumsy with Trump in such close proximity. To be honest, I’m surprised he lasted as long as he did. Trump always destroys what he considers to be imperfections.”

“Why doesn’t he destroy himself then?” said Peter.

Ellen laughed. “Unfortunately he’s so imperfect that he believes himself to be perfect. As we all very well know.”

“This Trump character seems so brutal and psychopathic that the whole situation does not feel real,” said Tumay. “Can he really be killing so many innocent people with impunity? Killing a person for spilling their drink on his shoes! This is madness.”

“Believe me,” said Captain Branson, “he’s for real. His only weakness is his overinflated ego. Tell him what a wonderful person he is and you might live a little longer, but he’ll kill you in the end all the same. He’s killed all his cloned family members that he secretly brought on the mission.
